Dear Mulberry,
We had a tea party. First you gathered fairy sticks. The thinnest sticks burn the hottest. Then we looked for tinder. Tinder burns hot and fast to catch the fairy sticks. We talked about what gifts fire brings and what dangers it poses.
Fire can destroy, so I set some rules. These are rules I learned from other fire makers. There must be a fire tender who tends the fire. That means they are always watching it. If they leave, they make someone else the fire tender before they go, or they make sure the fire is out. If anyone wants to add something to the fire, they must ask the fire tender first.
Alas, I couldn’t get the fire to burn long enough and hot enough to boil the water though I had everyone’s help. So we made fire soup to make sure there wasn’t any hot spots left that could start a fire. You helped me pour the water. We stirred. We put our hands over the soup. No heat. We put a fingertip just at the surface of the water. No heat. We put a finger in the water. It was cool enough that we could put our finger in.
We were done. We made fire soup. The fire was out. No hot spots hot enough to start a fire. Then we used the electric kettle and made pumpkin rooibos tea. We had our tea party in our gathering space in the Hello Goodbye Yard. We ate biscuits (English for crackers) and told a spooky story about a cat, that changed into a ghost, that changed into a ghostbuster.
Love,
Teacher Michelle
